Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact

Not sure what the band's name means, but it sounds awesome. And not only does the band name sound cool, but luckily the music follows suit as well. I haven't actually listened to Gang Gang Dance's previous work, but I've grown rather fond of the most recent album Eye Contact which doesn't even come out until next week but is being streamed for free here for who knows how long.

Gang Gang Dance are a category of their own, and I don't need to peruse their discography to know this. One listen of the nine minute title track "Glass Jar" and you'll know you've stumbled across something terribly unique in the music world. It's nothing novel to combine electronic dance with rock. It's being done by thousands of bands from everywhere. So although you might hear someone describe them as a "dance rock" band a la Cut Copy, I completely disagree. Such a description would be selling short their insane, out of control creativity. It's as if Rush and Bjork combined their sounds and then completely reimagined themselves with pure electronic instruments and then injected each song with a heavy dose of LSD. There's a serious beat you can dance to, but only after you've dug through the layers of awesome ambient texture that completely cakes each song in atmosphere. I think the mark of a good band is one that finds its own unique sound and sticks to it regardless of style shifts and changes in direction. Gang Gang Dance play with hundreds of different musical ideas, yet manage to keep it all firmly rooted to a single, unshakable style.

You have to hear this thing to believe it and understand it. I'd give it a 10/10 right not but I think I have to let it marinate for a while first.
