The Walking Dead and such

I know a lot of buzz has been slowly generating since AMC greenlit The Walking Dead for production, but I only recently discovered the series last year when my brother Randy gifted me the first two volumes of the graphic novel. I had just finished reading World War Z, a "real-life" historical account of the Zombie War, a novel slightly akin to the original broadcast of Wells' War of the Worlds in that it tries its hardest to make the zombie apocalypse feel like a real threat. I loved that book. Loved it. Enough so that I really didn't want it to end.

The Walking Dead is a brilliant idea because finally there's a series of novels that theoretically has no end, so you don't have to bid farewell to interesting characters just after you've grown fond of them. The reader gets to witness a gradual period of evolution as each of the characters changes and grows due to the extreme circumstances in which they're forced to co-exist. The story isn't so much about zombies, but the people and their survival. So far the show's objective seems to be the same.

I loved the pilot for a number of reasons. Makeup, set design, music and cinematography were all fantastic. I won't go throw out the qualifier "for television" because the show would look just as good in a movie theater as it does on television. The acting needs a little bit of improvement here and there, but overall everyone does a fine job. The leading man plays Rick Grimes as a sort of Clint Eastwood cowboy, only he acts a lot more terrified than "The Man With No Name" ever would.

I had never watched any shows on AMC but so far I'm impressed by the quality and boldness of the show, and I'm extremely excited to see how the rest of the series is translated to television.
